Parent Evenings
As a parent, you constantly are seeking information, resources and other parents who can relate to the feelings you have and who have walked a similar path. As the parents of children with special needs, we all know too well the feeling of isolation. Parent to Parent recognized the need to further strengthen family connections through support and information and in 1989 started a program of Parent Evenings. These evenings provide an informal opportunity for parents to come together to meet other parents, share information, network and gather resources. Parent to Parent staff attend these evenings bringing resources and library materials. Over time these evenings have evolved to include guest speakers who speak to issues or topics in which parents have indicated an interest. Parent to Parent knows the value of peer support, the power of information, the importance of partnership, and the essential role of community in all of our lives. Parent Evenings are one more way we can respond to the support and information needs of families. Parents have stated that "Parent Evenings are very helpful and if anything are never long enough." Parents say that the Evenings reinforce that "you are not alone." One parent who attended said, "I've been to different meetings for different reasons and it's nice to see the faces of other parents to know there are other people out there and that Parent to Parent is there to help."
