Teaching Nursing Students: An Exciting, New Opportunity
Parent to Parent invites you to participate in another exciting opportunity to help educate health care professionals about family-centered care.  The Family Faculty Institute is pleased to introduce the Student Nursing Practicum, in partnership with the UVM School of Nursing.  Pairs of nursing students will build a relationship with a family over the course of four semesters, making home visits periodically to work with the family on the skills and concepts that they're learning about in their courses.  Parent to Parent is proud to support families in the role of teachers, sharing their experiences with future nurses.  Families will give a unique perspective to the students' studies, and students will share information about health promotion and the families' particular areas of interest.
This fall marks the pilot launch of this program, with five Parent to Parent families being matched with students and providing feedback to Parent to Parent.  While other families have been recruited as well, nursing professors report that students are especially interested in being matched with a Parent to Parent family because of all of our experience with the health care system.
In January, this program will roll out fully, and we hope that all spring sophomore students will be matched with a family.  That means we hope that 35 families will volunteer to be part of this rewarding experience.  Please call Valerie Wood-Lewis at 859-0049 to learn more and hear about the benefits of participating.  ©

Teaching Education & Communication Sciences Students: an Ongoing Opportunity
As the parent coordinator of the Education and Communication Sciences programs, Rhonda Costes makes student-family matches for both the fall and spring semesters at UVM.  These are one-time visits to your home from a student or a small group of students who see and experience life from a family's perspective when they visit with you for a couple of hours.
These visits have been completed for the fall and if you are interested in having an education student/s visit your home this spring, give Rhonda a call at 802-527-2234.  She looks forward to speaking with you.  ©

COME Hear About Home Visits from a Student's Perspective
On March 12, 2003, 7:00-8:30pm, we've invited a panel of medical students, former residents, nursing students and ILEHP trainees to speak about what they've learned from our various Family Faculty programs.  We know students love visiting and learning from families, but you, as the "real" teachers may not have had the opportunity to hear directly from students.  If you've ever hosted a student for a home visit, this might be of interest to you.  We'll have plenty of time for informal discussion and the chance to meet other parents involved in these programs.  RSVP to Clare Plunkett at 764-5290 x11.  ©
