Parent to Parent has been awarded two grants from the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council. Both grants will enable us to develop expertise on developmental disabilities services and will put us in the position of being able to provide knowledgeable, impartial information, referral and assistance to families, individuals and professionals across the state. We will also be working on building a statewide network that will connect families to each other, provide support, and enable people to strategize and advocate on public policy issues.

Through the generous support of these three-year grants, Parent to Parent was able to augment our staff and expand our services to include a much needed specialty around developmental disabilities services in the state of Vermont. Jan Hancock, a Senior Family Support Consultant will take a lead role in providing outreach throughout the state, helping to strengthen the statewide network of families, individuals and professionals who work with them. Lauren Ware, a new addition to the Family Support team and based in the Hardwick area, will be training over the next few months to become our Developmental Disabilities Specialist and resource for the state. Lauren, as well as being a parent of a child with developmental disabilities, is a talented writer and researcher who will develop user-friendly materials and trainings to help navigate the sometimes daunting developmental services system. Lauren can be contacted at (802)441-4070. In addition, Parent to Parent was able to hire a part-time field staff in Brattleboro, Jaron Bartshe, as well as to increase the hours for our current field staff in Newport, Paula Manzi, and Holly Betit in Bennington.

The grant will also fund regional events, such as conferences, focus groups, and support groups. Three events occurred in the Bennington and Northeast Kingdom areas. Events called "Families Together", for those who have families members who are adults with developmental disabilites, will be ongoing throughout the state. If you are a parent of a youth or adult with a developmental disability, please contact Lauren or Jan, or your local Family Support Consultant, with any questions or if you have ideas for events or supports needed in your area. We need to hear from you about how we can best help! ©
