books and beyond

As a reminder, for those of you who know us, and as an invitation to those of you who are new readers, we encourage you to take advantage of our rather extensive lending library. Books, videos, audio cassettes, articles and newsletters are available for both families and professionals. If you wish, a complete listing of all material is available upon request. Should you have any favorites you would like to share with us, please do so. You may reach us at 655-5290 or 1-800-800-4005 or email us. As a feature of the newsletter, we will offer staff selections, with brief descriptions of what is contained in the material. Accompanying this information we'll include our own commentaries on why we feel the selection is especially good- please stay tuned!

BOOKS

Within our library selections, we have catalogues from numerous publications. One, in particular, is from the Exceptional Parent Journal, entitled, "Exceptional Parent Library." Many of the recommended selections are listed with reference to a specific disability, as well as general titles. In some cases, we may have the title on hand. In other instances, we have, on occasion, ordered a specific title with certain popular selections. For Example: The New Languages of Toys - An updated and expanded how-to guide for using everyday toys to develop communication skills in children with disabilities and make playtime a fun and educational experience.

VIDEO/AUDIO

Our recommendation this go-round is a recently purchased set of Audio Tapes, recorded live at the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders Conference, Nov '97, in Rockville, Maryland. The title of the conference was Approaches to Developmental and Learning Disorders in Infants and Children: Theory and Practice 1997. Some of the highlights include: * New Biomedical Treatment Approaches for Autistic Spectrum Disorders * New Interventions to Enhance Auditory Processing, Language, Reading and Learning * Early Detection: Blessing or Curse These were highly recommended by a parent and have been asked for by others. "Early Edition", published by the Institute on Disability/UAP - University of NH. Her attendance at the school and later accomplishments are incredibly inspiring for all who embark upon her story.
